OBSEEN EXSTREAM (Maruosa, Exstream 2011)

| |
You know what riles my blood?
Poser chumps who claim to like violent sounds but actually are just following fashion.
Now Steve, I hear you say, surely all music has a fashion aspect to it? Even grind?

My response would be; of course it does, and don't call me Shirley. Or Steve.

However attractive a gateway to a scene, following something purely because you like wot the people wot like it like to look like makes you a glib effort vampire adorning yourself with the chance aesthetics of someone's genuine passion. Moreover it makes you into a soulless hipster (aside: if that upsets you it's because you are already a soulless hipster, sorry) and I suggest you direct your browser away from this fine blog henceforth.

Years of being this much of a cantankerous sod has made me seek some kind of voight-kampff test to determine which of my many, many, many acquaintances is a real human who likes music and
which are replicants.

The best method so so far discovered is to take SUBJECT A: grind fan claimant and make them listen to something like MARUOSA.
You see, this kind of abusive electronic music is the same as grindcore, but arriving from of different place altogether.

Freshly dropped from the consistently awesome GRINDCORE KARAOKE is the rather descriptively titled EXSTREAM, latest release from Japanese speaker-botherer MARUOSA.
It's brutanic, a hyper-confusing melange of digital blasts, aggro-style ranting and guitar slams and despite the overall 'digital feel' it's very song-oriented. In fact it's catchy! A lot of the tracks have a upbeat (as well as up tempo) feel, taken the terrorising nature of the music as a given you can tell it's maker is having an absolute whale of a time with this, which for me it totally refreshing.
Too much earbashing audio takes the easy route of covering itself with obvious samples in a tired attempt at attaining an oppressive sense of anguish (as recently covered HERE). The only thing oppressive about EXSTREAM is the square-waved 808 kick pounding you in the ossicles.

ABOVE: fuck you, y'know?

As far as this reviewer is concerned cutting up sampled beats and sounds is just as valid an expression of true grinding freakery as learning to play guitars (which we all know are for old men anyway) so before you all give me one billion comments about laptops aren't grindcore I invite you all to re-read my opening glop and take a long hard look in the shower.
And if that hasn't convinced you to give this a go then my name isn't Austin Derbyshire*

just to be my own brand of a contrarian dick, but don't people have to start somewhere? i essentially got into punk and metal cuz my friends did. i grew out of my lazy/glib phase and made my own emotional connection to the music. i just don't want to exclude anyone because they don't have the siege's drop dead on original vinyl and a phd in blastbeats.

otherwise, carry on. cuz i agree.

AH, but that is not my point.
What I was saying (albeit with tongue firmly in dung) is frequently I speak to people who like extreme metal type stuff, yet will not touch something that is not considered 'canon' by their niche group.
Even when the thing in question is basically just another take on the same kind of concepts- i.e. say they hate speedcore but claim to love grindcore; they are patently similar in many ways.

I do not equate loving and following a music form with the necessity to buy any of it, that's not at all what I mean- I'm just dealing with odly contrary attitudes.

ahhh. clearly i missed your point. yeah some of the divisions people draw for themselves are pretty arbitrary and ridiculous.

Well I suspect they do not draw those divisions for themselves :)

cuz like ya know i'm only into direct action oriented vegan grind played by gender positive, multicultural bands that are run as an anarchosyndacalist collective who release albums straight to 8-track.

I only like apocalyptic anti-capitalists non english-language mincecore bands that split up before they played a gig or wrote any music whatsoever.
i've already enjoyed that, dismissed it as another hipster trend and come back around to appreciating it ironically.

now it's all about shamanistic crust performed using ancient peruvian folk instruments played by blind lepers.
Its all about the left handed short sighted, two headed turtle worshipping freemasons, who play crusted black metal from paper mache and paperclips, in venues owned by the vatican.

ok you win.
i present you with this shiny almost new internet. it was own by a little old lady that only drove to gawker once a week.

Its not about winning, winning is a concept created by the capitalist controlled church and the grand powers that secretly brainwash you to keep the people in order , and as an Full time ultra mega free radical counter conforming urban guerilla partisan, I will never accept such a concept nor title of "winner", me and the commune of the worlds smartest people (which includes someone who has had a job once, and knows how the system really works) instead grant each other the title of animals for such accomplishments, and the title equivalent for winner is Self Reproducing Australian Marsh Toad.

I think as long as you dig the music and its apparent you aren't a poser then everything is good. You don't have to buy releases but it is encouraged, seeing as how supporting your artists is good for obvious reasons. Normally people get into Grindcore through one of two routes, the Metal route or the Punk route. I kind of went on both but I prefer my grindcore more Punk based as most Metal genres bore me. As for this band, its pretty good for being a little drum machine project cause 90% of those suck. I'm a big fan of Libido Airbag and Nunwhore Commando 666 so this is pretty cool to listen to, great review.

I got into grind through my metal roots, and that is something that will always have a soft spot for me.In general despite I may abhor and dislike certain genres, but I don't mind people who listen to such music. My main issue is people who listen to music for the reasons because "fashion" dictates it is in, or to feel a sense of belonging without feeling the music. Music is something that should manifest passion, and that is the reason you should like it, not any other money induced or image induced reason.
I mean even people who are really into the emo sub-culture and the like, I have no problems with them even if they seem "scensters", as long as they are genuinely passionate about the music, then personally no problem exists.

I got into grind via two separate things:

1: I randomly saw Napalm Death in my first year of Uni. I had obviously heard grind before then but this gig made a real connection.

2: I was in a Harsh Noise band for years, and when the main guy moved away I wanted to play guitar in a band again, but wanted to keep the kind of aggressive sounds I had been making.
To me personally, all Grind really is is a mindset. I mean, the term 'Grindcore' is more synonymous with a genre and sound, but Grind can take form in Jazz, Hardcore, Speedcore... basically pushing the epitome of what 'Punk' might be to the absolute Nth degree. Maruosa most certainly fit this tag in my mind, as do many other speedcore/breakcore groups i.e. Bong Ra constantly sampling Bolt Thrower
